As the pioneers of craft lager since 1995, we believe in brewing quality beers for our drinkers, made with the care and attention they deserve, resulting in gentle, naturally carbonated, flavoursome lagers and pale ales.
But we also drive to give our environment the care and attention it deserves too…
With so much chat about sustainability and protecting our planet, we are doing our bit to help…
NATURAL SPRING WATER
Freedom Brewery relocated from London to the Staffordshire countryside of Bagots Park near Abbots Bromley in 2004. This enabled us to expand and grow but also more importantly it utilised what was 240 feet underneath the rolling hills, the famous Burton brewing water, packed with salts and minerals and perfect for brewing. It is common to hear brewers talk of ‘Burtonising’ their water however Freedom has spring water pumped up from our own borehole, deep under the ground from the Burton aquifer. This is simply tipped into the mash tun untouched, to begin the process of brewing our outstanding range of lagers.
VEGAN SOCIETY CERTIFIED
Unlike most breweries, we turned our back on the traditional method of clearing beer using Isinglass from fish – unsustainable in the long term – instead allowing the beer to clear naturally over time in maturation. This process is independently audited by The Vegan Society and so all Freedom beers are declared and badged vegan.
CLEANING OUR WASTE WATER
Sustainability runs throughout the brewing process at Freedom and in 2014 our brewery commissioned a reed and willow terraced water treatment process. All our waste water is now treated by nature as it flows down a series of terraces below the brewhouse, clean enough at the bottom to be put back into the stream that meanders along the valley. This in turn has added to an already important wildlife area with many rare birds attracted by the cover and water.
These efforts resulted in SIBA – the association of independent brewers – awarding its much-coveted Green Brewery of the Year award to Freedom in 2015.
EFFICIENT BREWING
Back in the brewery, dedication to the environment continues with an energy-efficient brewing kit (reducing our energy consumption by 30%), spent brewing grains recycled to the cattle at the farm next door and strict recycling.
SUPPORTING BIODIVERSITY
We have committed to supporting biodiversity with our own bee hives next to the brewery! The bees are thriving amongst a swathe of wild flowers around the brewery, and are managed by their own apiarist.
There’s always more that can be done, but we like to think we’re on the right track!
And the latest releases, offers and fun stuff from Freedom!
